European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
