Courageous Train Employee Endures Life-Threatening Wounds Amid Mass Stabbing Incident on Express Train

A brave railway employee who stepped in to save travelers during a mass knife incident on a express train has suffered critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Particulars of the Frightening Event

CCTV video allegedly shows the employee trying to halt the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through compartments.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Emergency Reaction and Aftermath

The event on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have now been discharged from hospital.

A bystander recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced officers on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – especially the courageous member of rail staff whose family are being supported by trained officers,” stated a high-ranking police officer.

Labor Reaction and Calls for Measures

Train unions were swift to praise employees and call for increased action. A union leader said he would be “seeking urgent discussions with government, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the best possible support, tools and robust procedures in place”.

A different union leader encouraged the rail company and authorities “to act quickly to review safety, to support the affected employees, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.

Driver Commended for Rapid Action

The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“The driver didn’t halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he carried on going until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” explained a union official.

Additional Details

Authorities said they received the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness described initially thinking if the event was a Halloween prank, but soon understood from people's expressions that it was serious.

Authorities have stated there is no evidence to suggest the event was a terror-related attack and have asked the public to come forward with any additional details.

Rail operations on the impacted route are anticipated to experience disruption until the following day, with travelers recommended to postpone their journeys where feasible.

Individuals with details that could assist the inquiry are encouraged to contact authorities by texting a specific number with a reference code.
