Caelan Doris Included in Irish Selection While McCarthy Left Out

Rugby squad announcement news

Returning manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn matches, but lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.

Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new member in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "backup".

After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at full-back.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's three league matches this season and played in the second string's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Ulster second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to deputise for the captain if the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in the capital on Monday before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
